WAYNE MARSHALL EYES THE NEXT LEVEL

Artiste Wayne Marshall, now in an alliance of sorts with the Marley clan, is poised to take his music to the next level. This perspective is born out of the recently signed album deal with the Marley's Ghetto Youth outfit, with which he has been working for over a year and half.

"We've been working with the Marleys for like over a year and a half, and we just recently, very recently, inked a deal for the first album which is still in the early stages," the dancehall deejay with the signature sound "tru tru tru" revealed.

A household name in dancehall since the mid-90s, Marshall promised that by next year the album, which will be produced by Damian and Steven Marley on their Ghetto Youths' imprint, will be ready.

"So I'm really looking forward to that which is really going to take my music to the next level with the expertise of Steve and Damian (Marley) at the controls," he told the Observer.

The Love Over All Foundation, is an organization created by Ky-mani Marley as a means of

'giving back'. This charitable organization not only caters to the upliftment of children, Ky-mani's number one priority, but Love Over All is also focused on restoring values, rebuilding schools and supplying the basic necessities needed in the classrooms, as well as the community.

Born in Falmouth, Trelawny, Ky-mani has always been passionate about returning to his birthplace and doing his part to assist the residents in the community. Earlier this year, Ky-mani and his friend Lumba Green, also from Falmouth, decided to 'just do it'. They revisited Falmouth where they immediately put their plan into action.

Re-evaluating, refurbishing and repainting. That's the order. Rebuilding! Since Falmouth All Age School is right 'by the seaside', Ky-mani's plans include building a patio so the school will have a proper entrance, thus keeping away the dirt and mud. A new netball court and a refurbished soccer field is also on Ky-mani's 'to do' list. This project is dear to his heart and donations have already poured in to assist the foundation with expenses.

While concentrating their efforts on providing computers, books, uniforms and soccer jerseys for the students, Ky-mani and Lumba took time out to treat the almost 800 students to lunch. They were also on hand to provide and present trophys on sports day to the schools athletes. Realizing that these children deserve the best of the present and a reason to look towards the future, the Love Over All Foundation is all action...no talking.

Currentlly, the foundations website is under construction and Ky-mani is optimistic about the future with regards to this project. The plan is to rebuild...one step at a time. There is strength in numbers and Ky-mani plans to execute with Love-Over All.

Review: Stephen Marley in Montauk, NY @ Surf Lodge 5/31/2009

Lauri and I traveled out to the east end of the island to see Stephen Marley’s last show of the Acoustic Mind Control tour. After the roads went from three lanes in each direction down to two then one and passed through the Hamptons winery and boutique areas, the scenery drastically changed to scrub pines and sandy beaches of Montauk, a less trendy area known as “The End”. We were an hour before the posted show time and I missed the turnoff (blushing) we continued all the way out to the famous lighthouse. We got back into town and quickly found the venue, The Surf Lodge, a large house converted into a restaurant and bar with some small expensive motel rooms. We went out to the deck and saw that the stage was already set up and some of the players of instruments were tuning up. We had a really expensive dinner which was ok because the show admission was free.

The sun was still high but a chilly breeze blew in from the lake and some low clouds blocked the sun, prompting the waiters to bring out blankets for the ladies. We then made our way out to the deck again and found many more people had arrived and taken their places in front of the stage. We tried to squeeze in on the side where there were some reserved tables, but were soon shooed away. Lucky for us some people had just vacated a spot right in front of the stage. The show started promptly at seven (six was the posted time but this must be Jamaica time right?) with a few raindrops, but in pure Rasta fashion when Stephen took the stage the sun re-emerged and the breeze ceased to chill.

He started with Rainbow Country, Chase Dem and a wonderful Lonely Avenue and other crowd pleasers like No Woman No Cry. Many people were clearly fans, but some were just people who were in town and talked loudly during the performance. Unphased Stephen tore through the set and kept people singing, dancing and cheering. When he played The Traffic Jam, I may have tripped him up a bit when he sang the line “Everywhere me go mi say me must lef me Stamp” I made an exaggerated Hand Stamp gesture which made him laugh and restart the song. Next came Iron Bars which he started and when he got to the second verse, he called out Julian who came out and they did the whole song together and then finished with Could You Be Loved.

They came back out for another four songs and a woman Maya came out and sang Let Her Dance with him. Julian was now standing at the side of the stage area and Lauri slipped over and got him to autograph the CD sleeve for Awake. Stephen finished the show with an incredible Redemption Song which he finished with some rousing vocals. The players of instruments were great, they included Chris, the bass player from the Melody Makers and the guy who always waves the Rasta flag (sorry I can’t recall his name) and the young guitar player did a wonderful job. After the show we went on the bus and got Stephen to Autograph Mind Control and we got photos with him and Julian. All in all it was a great time, hope to see Julian out on tour soon!

Julian Marley's Awake - Second Downloaded Reggae Album in USA (article 5/31/2009)

Artiste Julian Marley currently has the second most downloaded reggae album in America, but the album released this week, has yet to tick onto the Billboard charts.

His album Awake is number two on iTunes US reggae album charts. His father, reggae icon Bob Marley, is number one in that market and most other European iTunes markets. Julian Marley is not fussy about chart success. "Anything it do we would be grateful," he told the Sunday Observer at his soft launch earlier this month.
The US iTunes chart (amongst the internet's most popular music stores) has five Marley entries in the top 10. Indeed, Julian beat his brother Ziggy Marley, whose Family Time album now sits at number four on the chart. Family Time had peaked at number one on iTunes and Billboard but now lags in the top 10 on both charts.

Julian Marley: Lots of work, working with the family and my brothers. There have been a couple of projects we’ve been doing down in Jamaica, and lots of concerts for causes in Ethiopia and stuff. We did the Marley Brothers Tour and a couple of other things. And of course just working on the upcoming album.

MMIM: Do you identify with mainstream reggae artists who are more a part of pop culture?
Julian Marley: I listen to it still. You might find me on one or two, but I definitely have a responsibility to bring this reggae music back up to the forefront, musically.

MMIM: You’re one of the few reggae artists, or artists period, that plays several instruments. How did that come about and how is it reflected in your music?
Julian Marley: Really it was just our father’s ear; we just always picked up instruments. We listened to music all the time, and there were a wide variety of instruments in the music we listened to. I was around my grandmother when I was six or seven and she used to play the piano and that was when I first started playing keyboard. The first instrument I learned to play was the drums though, and then I went on to learn the guitar.

And yeah, being able to play many instruments makers you better rounded, because you can be somewhere and always work on your music and not have to wait on someone. And it’s always good to be a musician as well as an artist because you can work thoroughly.

Yesterday, the MJO had the opportunity to spend a few minutes with musical artist Julian Marley. One of Bob Marley’s four sons, Julian is preparing to release Awake, his first solo album in six years, on Tuesday, May 26 and is getting ready to possibly go on a nationwide tour in support of his album. We hope you enjoy the interview as much as we did.

Q. MJO: Your new album “Awake” is being released 5/26/09. Can you tell us a little about the album? Are there any themes you had?
A. Julian Marley: Ja man. Progressive. I want to awaken people’s minds.

Q. MJO: We really like Boom Draw, it’s a great song to smoke to. What’s your favorite smoking song on the album?
A. JM: All of ‘em! Haha… But Boom Draw is a good one to smoke to.

Q. MJO: It has been mentioned that you had a much more hands on approach to the production side of the new album. Can you talk at all about how new that experience was for you, from an artist’s perspective? Was working on the production side as enjoyable as working on the artistic/creation side of the album?
A. JM: Naturally. It’s a natural growth. It’s been since 2003 since I released an album and those are some of the things I’ve been working on. Also, the whole cd is performed by my live band The Uprising.

Q. MJO: You have songs with Mr. Cheeks, Stephen and Damian. Why no Ziggy?
A. JM: Haha! Next one! He’ll be on the next one. You know with the Mr. Cheeks song I finished in the studio and went home and came back the next day and he was on it. And I really liked i so I had to keep that one on the cd. That’s how a lot of this stuff is, just random….

Q. MJO: We heard you are planning to be on the Blazed ‘n Confused tour with Snoop Dogg and your brother Stephen. Tell us a little about the tour.
A. JM: Well no plans right now. Not on yet. We’re still working on some things and setting it up.

Julian Marley urges 'Awake' on third album (article 5/17/2009)

Though primarily a roots reggae album, Julian Marley delves into several other genres on his latest project, Awake.

On the album, due out May 26 through Ghetto Youths/Universal, there is a marked difference between the feel of two adjacent songs on the same topic, the slow, bare-bones (musically) Just In Time, which is followed by the up-tempo reggae piece, Jah Works. Both deal with the spirituality of the Rastafarian. Marley tells The Sunday Gleaner that the tempo for Just In Time was decided when the song was being constructed.

"Songs like that don't need a whole heap of instruments. It is a more organic sound. It is a desolate sounding song. Jah Works now, more upbeat, more in the reggae beat," he says.

Variations in tempo and vocal timbre are part and parcel of the album, the title track of which was the first that Marley came up with. (He points out that it took him two years from conceptualisation to completion, but he was not "really consistent right through" the entire 24 months). So he started out with the love song, Oh Girl, featuring rapper Mr Cheeks, with a brief monologue in a deep voice and quickly goes into a good falsetto. Boom Draw is an out-and-out rub-a-dub tune, while All I Know is a hip-hop one.

BOB DOESN'T 'FIT THE BILL', SAYS ZIGGY

Quadruple Grammy award winner, Ziggy Marley does not want his father reggae icon Bob Marley on legal tender, opposing the position of cultural stakeholders.

Ziggy... Bob Marley is already a national hero, whether the government says so or not "Me no inna that," said Marley in Sunday Observer interview. "Give unto Caesar what is Caesar, we no inna that. Hugh Shearer is good, put him on the $5,000 bill. Me alright with that."

The images on Jamaica's legal notes are reserved for heroes and prime ministers - and is amongst the highest honour, but Marley implied it would solidify the reggae icon as a part of 'Babylon' - the system he opposed. He, however, was not against Bob Marley becoming a national hero as it would represent the people's will not the system.

"Bob Marley is already a national hero, whether the government says so or not. We already know he is our hero. So it's up to the government whether they want to get on the people's side," he said.

'FAMILY TIME' FOR ZIGGY

Grammy winner Ziggy Marley tops the charts with a his new kids album - Family Time - which he describes as recession-proof opening new markets that weed-themed reggae could not.

At the same time he says that his eldest child Daniel at 20 will continue the family legacy and should release an album in two years.

"The music industry is way down... but parents are always looking for good music for the children. So we always need music for the kids," he said of the album which debuted at

number one on Billboard's reggae charts beating his previous peak at number three with Dragonfly in 2003.

"It's a new frontier for me as an artiste and it's an example for other artistes...The violence and herb music or whatever leave some doors closed and we want to open every door."

It's the perfect marketing tool, he said of the easy going journey of original tunes and a few covers. Kids, he said, will listen to Family Time today and get into reggae tomorrow. "Influence them from them young," he explained, adding that God inspired him to spread a love-message via the youth. His reward has been a hit record and unprecedented "media exposure".

Ziggy debuts at # 1 on Billboard Reggae Album Chart

Ziggy Marley’s newest release, Family Time made its debut this week at the coveted top spot of the Billboard Top Reggae Album Chart.

Family Time pushed ska band Easy All Stars, Easy Stars Lonely Hearts Band to the number two position. This spot was formerly held by Rasta Got Soul, the most recent offering from deejay Buju Banton. Banton recently made his debut at number two, to much fanfare, and has since been unable to knock Easy All Stars from the top of the charts. Rasta Got Soul peaked at number 2 and now slides into the number 3 slot.
Over on the Billboard Top 200 chart, Family Time made its debut at #149 and slid into the #20 slot on the Top Independent Albums chart.

Julian Marley gives a listen to 'Awake'

At first, Julian Marley played excerpts of varying lengths from songs on his new Awake album, then he delivered two tracks live at the Bob Marley Museum, 56 Hope Road, St Andrew, last Wednesday evening.

Awake initially sounded extraordinarily ordinary, the title track urging active participation in life presented first and then On The Floor, which Marley described as "that dancing kind of party tune". Then came Boom Draw, a rub-a-dub ode to the precious green stuff and it wasn't ordinary anymore. The audience on the grounds of the museum knew the difference as well, their response indicating that a restart was required and duly granted.

Host of the listening session, Carlette DeLeon, said that Awake is Julian Marley's third album, emphasising that he is a multi-instrumentalist, Julian eventually showing his guitar playing abilities in tandem with guitarist Paul and percussionists Bongo Herman and Sticky. But that was after he worked his way through the album on Gully Bank sound system, mostly in the same order as the recording.

[…]“You know they say that the greatest musician in Jamaica is Bob Marley,” Buju told the crowded room. “I don't believe that because we have greater musicians to come. Bob was the most promoted, and well promoted, and we have to appreciate that because it’s our culture. But don't kill our culture… Enough is enough.”

Although the crowd at UWI reportedly applauded his remarks, they were not as well received outside the lecture hall. Jamaican media as well as radio shows and websites around the world have been flooded with outraged remarks from music critics and Bob Marley’s millions of fans. When asked for his thoughts on the matter, Ziggy laughed for a long time before speaking his mind.

“Me love my father, you know? And me love all of my elders and my heroes. And I would never say anything to put down any of them. From Bob to Toots to Peter [Tosh] to Bunny [Wailer]. I wouldn’t say anything to put down any of those guys. You understand? I lift up them. Those are our heroes. We lift them up. We don’t put them down.”

After a brief pause, Ziggy added the following: “My father wasn’t a person who brag about himself. It’s what he has done that has made people speak of him how they speak of him. He just does his music and that’s it… You got people who think differently but my father and a lot of these artists, you can’t even talk about them in just the sense of Jamaica. It’s the world we haffi talk bout. So that’s all me have to say, we lift up our heroes we don’t put them down.”[…]

The stars are currently working on tracks for the record - although Jagger and the Marley brothers have clashed over what time they should actually use the studio. "Damian's a night owl, whereas Mick likes to hit the studio in the morning," a well-placed source reveals.

The currently-untitled album - which also features Bono - is set to be released on the International Day Of Peace (September 21).

[…]EXPRESS: You have another album geared toward kids coming out in June that uses your father's music. What will that be like?

MARLEY: It's called "B Is for Bob." Obviously, my father's music is safe for kids already, and I've heard a million different versions of "Three Little Birds." Even Elizabeth did one! But the record company came with the idea, and they just wanted to repackage the remasters [into a kids' album]. And I said, "What about giving me the masters and let me rework them with a kids' thing in mind musically, so that we don't put back out the masters in a different packaging." Everybody have that already; don't need to go buy the same version of the same song. And they were cool with that. So, I took "Three Little Birds" and what we did with that, we just made it an acoustic version — just Bob and the guitar singing that song. What I tried to do with the song was to make it more personal, more intimate. Bob is there singing the song ... a more in-the-room organic feel. ... I love it, I love it! A few other songs: "Stir It Up," "High Tide Low Tide," "Small Axe" — which I love, too. I believe that one relates to kids: 'If you're a big tree, we are a small axe." I make up stuff, songs about whatever we're doing. Like at dinnertime, my son will ask me to "sing me something." Or brushing teeth -- "brush up, brush to your left, brush to your right."

Hey, I have that song, too! So why a family album now?
In my case, this was something just happened, just occurred naturally. I played the kids stage at a music festival (Austin City Limits Festival 2007), and I understood why this was happening -- it was happening for the future, for peace, for family. I want to feed them a higher concept than just the cow jumping over the moon. I have young kids, so it's for the children -- for my children, but it's for everyone, with children in mind.

What did artists like Paul Simon and Willie Nelson say when you asked them to do a family album?
I'm not comfortable asking people, but doing a family album was a good reason -- it's not about me, but about the children. Some of the proceeds from the album will go to a school in Jamaica (ed: Chepstowe Basic School in Port Antonio, Jamaica)... why not ask?

Do you have a favorite track or memory from recording the album?
The first day in the studio, I carried toys to the studio, invited [Ziggy's daughter] Judah and kids to the studio, had a recording party and had pizza.

You know, the duet with Judah on the title track is one of my favorite moments on the album...
Yeah, Judah was the angel that oversaw the whole project.[…]

Nas and Damian Marley on their 'Distant Relatives' collaboration (article 4/22/2009)

Nas and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley recorded one excellent single together, "Road to Zion," in 2005. As much as I enjoyed hearing the N.Y. rap legend and the reggae scion play off each other's styles on that track, though, I never guessed that they would be following it up four years later with a full collaborative album, Distant Relatives, tentatively set for release this June. Turns out, neither did they.

"I didn't really plan this," Nas told me when I reached him by phone recently. "It just feels right." In a separate conversation, Marley explained that the idea for Distant Relatives originated last year with his management: "The idea was for us to do an EP based on Africa, using one or two tracks that didn't make my album, likewise one or two tracks that didn't make his album. Once we started working on the music, though, everyone was so excited that we decided to make this a full-out album." The duo has spent about three months so far recording on and off in L.A. and Miami, splitting vocal duties while Marley handles the bulk of the production. "Damian is an incredible producer, man," Nas says. "He's conducting trumpet players, bass players, piano players, drums, background vocals, everything, putting beats together. He's getting his Quincy Jones thing happening!" Marley laughs heartily when he hears of this last comparison: "I didn't know [Nas] felt that way, big up. We've done so much work in L.A., where there's a lot of things available -- so I'm really making use of the fact that I can get live strings or great keyboard players." Damian's older brother Stephen Marley has also done production work for Distant Relatives, and Nas mentions the possibility of getting beats from rap producers like Large Professor, the Alchemist, J.R. Rotem, and DJ Khalil. They'd also like to draft a handful of marquee-name guests -- "everyone from Stevie Wonder to Young Jeezy," Nas says.
There are currently a dozen or so tracks under consideration for Distant Relatives, many of them revolving around the concept of Africa. "We've tried to maintain that theme, whether it be using African samples or speaking about Africa," says Marley. Both he and Nas hope the resulting material will transcend listeners' expectations of them as artists. "I hate to say this phrase, but to me it feels like world music," Nas says. On Family Time, Grammy-award winning Ziggy Marley has created a gentle batch of "children's" recordings, bred with intelligence and respect for adult and child. The album's reggae almost masks its purpose, it being a great cross-generational bridge for the whole brood. It was helmed by superstar record producer, Don Was, and although some songs include potentially overshadowing celebrities such as Willie Nelson, their presence serves as extended family members who are mindful of their subtle mission. The intentional exception is "Walk Tall" that features vocals by Paul Simon whose voice and phrasings seem interchangeable with Marley's in what is a great game of audio hide and seek.

Wisely avoiding stereotypical, squeaky-voiced pandering, Marley sings to both the kids and the grownups in the room. His clever "Ziggy Says" is much more engaging than your run-of-the-mill "Simon Says" since he requests, "Imagine you can fly," "Make the sign of peace," "Stop and say,'Hi!'," and "Hug who you know," as matter-of-factly as he sings, "Wiggle your toes." Toots, without his Maytals, adds some local flavor to "Take Me To Jamaica," and some popular children's entertainers stop by, such as Elizabeth Mitchell, Laurie Berkner, and the genre's latest addition, Jack Johnson. The most interesting guest is Willie Nelson whose vocals come off like a wise ol' grandpa, the kind who can utter three words and get you to absorb a book's worth of knowledge. That's what he brings to the mic on Woody Guthrie's "This Train." And one of the more profound tracks is "Cry, Cry, Cry" on which Marley sings "set the children free." Although this song is overtly about imagination and such, it is also a thinly-veiled protest song with a global context. But mainly, as the title track says, the album has a simple message: "Lift up your hearts with a smile, lift up your feet with a dance, lift up your spirits with a song, it's Family Time." […]

Whose idea was it to do this album?
It came about through an idea that was really from management. I guess the seed was sowed before [with] me and Nas working together previously. But it was really my manager who brought the idea to me saying that it would great if me and Nas did an EP together toward Africa. So, originally when the idea came to me, it was supposed to be like five to six songs based around Africa. And when we started working on the music, everybody was loving what we’re doing so we decided to make it an album.

Will you be spitting any rhymes?
Um, [laughs] well, the album isn’t finished yet, so we’ll have to see. I mean, a lot of the words I’m using, I have to express myself clearly so that even Nas fans can understand that are my fans. So I can definitely say that about the approach I’ve been taking on this album.

Will any of your brothers be featured on the album?
Stephen will be on the album also.

Have you always been a fan of Nas?
Yeah, definitely. That’s really how he became a part of "Road To Zion" cause I was a fan of his music.

If your father were alive, what do you think he'd say of this collaboration?
Well, I think he’d be very proud. I think Nas would be on the artists he would be a fan of in terms of what Nas stands for in his lyrics and what he has communicated to the fans over the years when it comes to Africa and African philosophy. So in that sense, I can see him being a fan of Nas even without me having to do an album with him. And of course, you know the fact we’re doing an album geared toward Africa there is no secret that was something that was very close to my father's heart, so that’s something that would definitely resonate with him.

Ziggy Marley Remixing Dad's Classics For Kids (article 4/13/2009)

Children's music is dominating Ziggy Marley's melody making these days -- both for himself and on behalf of his father, Bob Marley.

Marley is prepping for the May 5 release of "Family Time," an album of what he refers to as "family music" that includes originals as well as covers of Woody Guthrie's "This Train" and the Jamaican children's standard "Hold Em Joe," along with two spoken-word pieces by actress Jamie Lee Curtis. Other guests include Paul Simon, Willie Nelson, Jack Johnson and Toots Hibbert along with his mother Rita Marley and sister Cedella Marley. His three-year-old daughter Judah, who Marley calls his "muse" on the album, appears on the title track.

He'll follow that with the June release of a set of Bob Marley song's, revised and remastered with a children's audience in mind.

"I never really thought about doing music for children before," Marley, who's donating proceeds from "Family Time" to the Chepstowe Basic School in Port Antonio, Jamaica, tells Billboard.com. "I kind of realized why I'm being led into this world of family/children's music is because we have to speak to the children now. The children have the open-mindedness. They're going to grow up and make the world a better place, so it's them we have to have some kind of discussion with.

"So this is what this record is about, really, is the beginning of a discussion with children and families to make the future a better place for...the 'world' family. But it starts with our own families."

Marley hopes to continue that dialogue with the Bob Marley album, for which he took the original masters of eight classic songs and revised the instrumentation and arrangements, even using some of his father's alternate vocal tracks.

Duo will release Distant Relatives in June.

Nas and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley will be spending plenty of time together this summer. The duo are releasing a joint album called Distant Relatives in June as well as headlining the latest Rock the Bells tour.

It was announced Tuesday night (April 7) during a press conference that Nas and Marley will be joined on the road by KRS-One, Common, Big Boi, Wu-Tang members RZA and Raekwon, the rap supergroup Slaughterhouse, Brooklyn vets M.O.P., Pete Rock, newcomer Mickey Factz and the Roots. (That was a quick hiatus from trekking for the Philadelphia rap band.)

The North American leg of Rock the Bells starts June 27 and runs through August 9. Rock the Bells has traditionally been a place where legends meet promising newcomers. One of the highlights last year for Nas — a Rock the Bells vet — was when he brought out Jay-Z during the Long Island, New York, stop. This year, he'll have a partner for all his shows.

In a statement released to the press Tuesday, Nas said his new album — which mixes reggae and hip-hop — will offer social commentary on the U.S. and the Motherland.

"As an American, we have so much even in a so-called recession that a neighborhood like Queensbridge or Red Hook is Beverly Hills compared to the way people are living in Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Ghana," he said. "So obviously if we making records with that theme, there's gonna be things I want to build on. I think Africa has a lot to teach us."

"Africa is the backbone of the world and the foundation of everything, and Africans are in a situation where they need help more than anywhere else," said Marley, who helmed a bulk of the beats on the album. "We know there are dire situations here in America, but when you look at America — with public libraries and free education — these are not opportunities most Africans have. It's a completely different scale of trying to help people. As human beings, we're part of a human family."

Distant Relatives, according to the rep, addresses Nas and Jr. Gong's tight relationship as well as their African lineage.

Q. Where did you get the idea for this project?
A. Well, children are very important to me. They're a big part of my life. Most things that I do I feel like I'm guided to do, and this album felt that way. It is very important for me to sing these songs because children have open minds. If you can influence the kids, then the future is a better place.

Q. What was your impression of children's music before you made this record?
A. Yesterday I was listening to some other kids' music, and I really couldn't listen to it. I was like, 'Turn that off.' It was not saying anything. We wanted to make an album that the kids can bond with and they can die with. It's a record for kids, but for their lifetime and future generations of their family.

Q. What finally changed your mind about children's music?
A. I had the wrong idea until I met Dan Zanes, who told me it was about family; it's not about the kids alone. It's not about lollipops and ice cream or being silly and goofy. It's about family and joining in the music together as a family. It's about being real with your children.

Q. What did you learn about your family while making this record with them?
A. Making music brings us closer together as a family. The kids had a lot to do with it, too. I give them a lot of credit for helping me write the songs. They were my muse.

Q. What kind of music did your parents play for you as a kid?
A. I grew up on traditional Jamaican folk music. "Hold 'Em Joe," which is on my new record, was the first song I ever sang as a child. Obviously I also grew up on my father's singing and my mother's singing. But no, we didn't listen to music about ice cream and lollipops.
